Black Friday has arrived. Cyber Monday is around the corner. Amazon haven't developed any neat monikers for the rudely intervening Saturday and Sunday, but surely it's only a matter of time. This is the biggest shopping weekend of the year! A sales extravaganza! Buy, now, quick, go on, do it, fast! If you're anything like us, you're probably beginning to feel a little jaded about the whole shabang.
But here it is. So we thought it might be a good idea to do a quick round up our favorite methods of tackling this consumerist deluge. And given that buying for life can be prohibitively expensive, it would be a bit silly not to showcase a few rare deals from companies of unquestionable morals. It's not all discounts on your end – Patagonia are running normal prices and passing the savings on to planet Earth.
THE PATAGONIA WAY
Ever since 1985, Patagonia have been donating 1 percent of all sales towards not for profit environmental groups. This Black Friday, they're donating 100 percent of their sales to those same causes. You can purchase the perfect built-for-life jacket, sweatshirt, hat, glove, or bag and at the same time contribute your little bit towards the saving the planet. With recent events in mind, lord knows it's needed.
The #OptOutside Way
Another of our fave companies Outdoor Research (of the infinite guarantee) has partnered with REI to bring another enterprising Black Friday alternative to the table. Their respective staff are taking the day off, but they won't be staying at home. They'll be doing what they love the most: heading into the great outdoors with friends and loved ones. Join Outdoor Research on the trail today and help raise money for Paradox Sports – a fantastic charity that uses specialist equipment to give disabled people a chance to climb.
THE TOTAL BOYCOTT
More and more companies are deciding that this whole fuss is just not worth their time. In the UK, Asda decided to ignore the shopping extravaganza only a couple of years after launching Black Friday deals – scenes of frenzied deal seekers overwhelming their Wembley store in 2014 spread viciously across the news. Of course, customers are always blamed for these violent surges, but manufacturers can do more. For the majority in the UK and USA, wages have been falling relative to prices, and all the while hype is ratcheted up by certain brands and by the media. Consumerism to the rescue.
Hiut Denim is one of our favourite brands going for the boycott this year, closing down their website until the day has safely passed. Add them to your bookmarks to discover their amazing raw selvedge denim jeans, handmade and with free fixing for life.
RELIABLE MANUFACTURERS, SIMPLE SAVINGS
Ultimately, there isn't anything wrong with taking advantage of a few cherry picked deals to get your hands on something you might not have otherwise been able to afford. Buying for life can be an expensive business. We've selected a few of our favourite companies that are giving a rare opportunity to pick up their wares at a discounted price. You'll notice that most of these sales are across the board – we vastly prefer this to some companies' attempts at passing off an end of season clearance as a Black Friday bargain.
